Ashley’s debut album, Headstrong, was released on February 6, 2007 through Warner Bros. Records. The album was recorded from 2005 to 2006, with the first single “Be Good to Me” being released on December 26, 2006. Ashley worked with amazingly talented writers and producers, such as Diane Warren, J.R. Rotem, Ryan Tedder, Evan “Kidd” Bogart, Bryan Todd and Kara DioGuardi. The album title was chosen after Ashley’s personality and the album was used to formally introduce herself.
Headstrong‘s musical style derives from the genres of pop, hip-pop and contemporary R&B. Lyrically the album discusses themes such as broken hearts, crushes, self-confidence and Ashley’s personality. The album charted at number five on the Billboard 200, selling over 64,000 copies in its first week. It was certified gold by the RIAA and the Irish Recorded Music Association.
The lead single, “Be Good to Me“, was released in late 2006. The second single, “He Said She Said” peaked at number 58 in the US and within the top 20 in Germany and Austria. The last two singles were released exclusively in certain European countries. “Not Like That” charted in several European countries while the last single, “Suddenly“, only charted in Germany.
